Rapid Rehabilitation Shortens Hospital Stay After Total Joint Replacement

Total hip and knee replacements are becoming increasingly common, and a recent study suggests that the overall length of the hospital stay following either operation can be reduced through "rapid rehabilitation"—a physical therapy program that begins in the recovery room rather than the day after surgery.

"Rapid mobilization of total joint replacement patients in the recovery room can be accomplished safely and reduces the overall length of hospital say for over 70% of patients," concluded the study, published in the Bulletin of the Hospital for Joint Disease ("Rapid Mobilization Decreases Length-of-State in Joint Replacement Patients" - September 2013).
